Posted on 1st January 2012. Infocomm Club Achievements 2011 At Tampines North Primary School, video production or film making is viewed as a powerful educational tool that provides opportunities for pupils to develop their critical thinking and dialogical reasoning in this digital and media-rich age. Pupils become active and critical viewers and producers of films and videos as they reflect on their roles and rights, learn to participate responsibly and challenge their creativity. Since the setting up of the Infocomm Club in 2008 for ICT-savvy pupils to further hone their skills and knowledge in digital media, the school has attained a good record of achievements.
This year, the Year 2 Infocomm Club pupils participated in the Sports Safety Video Competition organised by the Singapore Sports Council. They submitted a 7-min video emphasizing on the need for each and every individual to take personal responsibility for their own safety whilst engaging in sports. The judges were very impressed with our pupils’ creativity and awarded them with the top prize, “Most Commendable Award” in the Short Film Category.
Another achievement was garnering the “Most Aesthetic Award” in the National Education Video Competition organised by Victoria School. Working on the theme “Truly Singapore”, the Year 3 Infocomm Club pupils created their own original music video on Singapore food. The pupils had a great and memorable experience filming at East Coast Park and learning about the different food dishes each culture brings. These achievements are clearly testimony to the rigour of our programmes and the steady development of our pupils’ knowledge and skills in digital media technology. Last but not least, a big THANK YOU to Mr Subash Pillai, Mr Muhd Haziq, Mr Zahir Latif and our Infocomm Club teachers, Mdm Hamidah and Miss Tan Poh Ling for their guidance and direction given to the pupils this year. Mdm Sharifah Feiruz - Level Head (ICT) P3 Chinese Cultural Camp 2011 During the September school holidays, the Chinese Department conducted a 1-day Chinese Cultural Camp for all our P3 pupils. The main objective of the cultural camp is to provide an immersive environment for pupils to learn and use the Chinese Language through hands-on tasks such as drama, performances and story-telling.
Most of our pupils found the activities conducted during the camp fun and interesting and were actively engaged throughout the camp. In fact, 90% of our pupils felt that they have become more interested in learning the Chinese Language after the camp. Miss Tham Pui San EZ (East Zone) Music Competition 2011
On the 31st of August 2011, Hanisah Hamizah Bte Hamzah (6.6) and her brother, Hirza Haizal Bin Hamzah (4.1) took part in the finals of the EZ Music Competition 2011 at Pasir Ris Crest Secondary School. They were 2 of the 4 finalists selected from 22 participants who went for the audition in the Solo Voice Pop Section. The competition was organized by East Zone Centre Of Excellence For Creative Arts - Music Satellite @ Pasir Ris Crest Secondary School as part of their efforts to develop musically talented students. During the competition, Hanisah Hamizah mesmerized the judges with her powerful voice when she sung “Hero” by Mariah Carey. Hirza Haizal also captivated the judges with his song “Goodbye” by Air Supply. Judges were impressed as they were able to perform so well at such a young age. And finally, Hanisah Hamizah managed to clinch the first prize beating the other 3 finalists while Hirza Haizal came in fourth. Both of them have brought glory to the school. Well done, Hanisah and Hirza! Mdm Salinah Rahman Hari Raya Concert 2011 In conjunction with this year’s Hari Raya Aidil Fitri celebration, the troupe from Keris Movement was invited to put up a Hari Raya Concert on the 12th of September. Through a skit, pupils were informed about the reasons why Muslim fast in Ramadan and pay Zakat (alms) every year.
Hari Raya songs were also sung in the dikir barat performance with pupils and teachers taking part singing and clapping their hands simultaneously. Everyone had fun watching the concert. Most of the teachers even wore Malay traditional costumes on that day. Mdm Salinah Rahman Parks Festival 2011 Congratulations, Mrs Parathi Manoomany!
You are indeed a source of inspiration to all of us in TNPS and we are very proud of you!'
Recess Recital (August 2011) The Recess Recital for August was held on 5 August (Friday). The theme followed our National Day theme, which is “Majulah, the Singapore Spirit”. There was a lot of buzz as the music room doors opened to welcome the pupils in. Door gifts in the form of the Singapore flag stickers were given out to early-comers. The going-through of the Concert Etiquette by Mdm Danker did little to quell the excitement and exhilaration, although it did settle the pupils down somewhere.
Mdm Helen Wam and her harmonica took centrestage as the number one item of that RR! Swaying gracefully to the rhythm of “Dayung Sampan”, Mdm Wam charmed us with this Malay folk song on her harmonica while an animation of the song was shown on the screen. Mdm Danker then proceeded to introduce to all about Dick Lee, a famous local composer, especially renowned for his role as a Singapore Idol judge. Dick Lee was born to a Peranakan father, Lee Kip Lee (who wrote for The Straits Times), and a Chinese mother, Elizabeth Tan. He was the eldest child in the family of five. More info is found in his autobiography, The Adventures of the Mad Chinaman.
Composer of several sell-out musicals like The Mad Chinaman, Forbidden City and Fried Rice Paradise, Dick Lee is a pop singer, composer, songwriter, and playwright as well. His works are also well-received overseas and he has become a household name through years of hard work. In the spirit of National Day, Siti Morianty bte Abdul Rahman from P5.4 and Hirza Haizal bin Hamzah from P4.1 sang a duet for “Bunga Sayang” (“flower of love”), taken from Fried Rice Paradise. Everyone was impressed by their rich and sonorous voices!
When the applause died down, Mdm Danker continued relating to us the Dick Lee’s involvement in National Day as its Creative Director in 2002 and 2010. Sung by Kit Chan, his NDP song “Home” is very popular, even to this day! Calling themselves “For One”, 5 boys from P4.1 – Eizlan Shalahuddin bin Ramlan, Aqil bin M. Andy, M. Haziq bin Nahar, Sulaiman bin Amir Paisar and Adam Danish bin Elfendei – presented to us a rousing finale. They choreographed their own dance steps to a medley of National Day songs set to a punky tune. Their amazing footwork set many jaws dropping! With that high note, the RR came to an end. Ringing still in the heads of many as they left, I figure, was the tuneful “Bunga Sayang”… In every village by the sea, It shares our joy and feels our pain, Bunga sayang, bunga sayang, Mrs Lydia Leong PERKOTA Language and Cultural Competition
Five of our pupils did Tampines North Primary School proud when they bagged the 2nd prize in the PERKOTA Language and Cultural Competition organised by Tampines West CC. Beating 12 other participating schools, our proud winners were only 2 points shy from the champion team, after pitting their language skills to answer questions from a broad range of language and culture. Member of Parliament, Mr Masagos Zulkifli was invited to grace the prize-giving ceremony and the winning team seized the opportunity to take pictures with him. Well done, pupils !! We are indeed so proud of you !! Mdm Eireena Rahman International Dance Camp 2011 The first International Dance Camp 2011 was held from 30 May to 1 June 2011. Our pupils anticipated this 3-day camp and reached school with high spirits. During this camp, pupils were exposed to different dance techniques. We had a guest instructor, Mr Mark who taught them a new dance genre, Hip Hop. They had a fun time with the instructors and looked forward to the performance that they would be putting up on the last day.
The post camp ceremony was held on the last day and parents were invited to watch their performance. Many supportive parents attended the ceremony and were delighted to see how enthusiastic their kids were on the stage. Despite having a short time to practise, the pupils shone on the stage with their moves and energy. Our dancers had a wonderful and bonding session with their fellow friends. Miss Liew Yuan Ting Recess Recital (July 2011) "A Salute to Furs, Fins and Feathers" was the theme for the Recess Recital held on 15 July 2011. The theme came about as we were celebrating Camille Saint-Saëns's Le carnaval des animaux (The Carnival of the Animals). Saint-Saëns composed this amazing piece in February 1886 while he was having his holidays in a small Austrian village. This musical suite consists of 14 movements in all. Each movement depicts an animal, except for movements #11 for pianists and #12 for fossils. However, apparently concerned that the piece was too frivolous and likely to injure his reputation as a serious composer, Saint-Saëns withheld its performance but allowed one movement, Le cygne (The Swan), to be published in his lifetime. Only small private performances were given for close friends like Franz Liszt.
This RR was special in that it was the first time listening tasks became the highlight, and animals were in the spotlight. Stuffed animal toys were strewn on the floor of the Music Room, and the early-comers had the pleasure of having these critters as their concert companions. There was a chirpy buzz of summer carnival as the pupils were treated to animal-shaped biscuits and given animal tokens (for 'kuti-kuti') as they entered. Some had masks and party hats too! [Incidentally, kuti-kuti is a traditional children’s game in which two opposing players take turns to flip deftly colourful plastic tokens on top of those of their opponent. If a player’s token lands on top of an opponent's token, the player then claims the opponent’s token as his own.] After the audience were reminded of the Concert Etiquette, the show began! With every movement, questions were asked. Pupils who gave the correct answers in this game were rewarded with an animal-shaped eraser. Mrs Kiw had just enough time to go through the first six movements of The Carnival of the Animals. We will keep the rest of the 14 movements for another RR. Don't miss that when it comes a-roaring by! Mrs Lydia Leong Mother Tongue Language (MTL) Fortnight For the past 2 weeks, the TNPS Mother Tongue Department organized a series of Mother Tongue activities during our Mother Tongue Language (MTL) Fortnight. The objective of the MTL Fortnight was to provide a platform for pupils to actively learn MTL and the associated culture so as to experience MTL as “Living Languages”. During this period of time, a wide range of activities were conducted to enable our pupils to enjoy their MTL in interesting settings. CL Department
Some of the interesting activities organized by the Chinese Department included cross-talk, language games, essay-writing competition and workshops. The pupils were actively engaged in these activities. They enjoyed themselves tremendously. Click here to view a video compilation of the activities conducted by the CL Department during the MTL Fortnight. Mdm Lee Su Woon ML Department The ML Department has designated two consecutive weeks for the Mother Tongue Language (MTL) Fortnight programme with the rational of creating an immersive environment for the learning of MTL. A wide range of activities were conducted with the principle of providing platforms for students to actively learn the Malay Language and its associated culture besides providing genuine opportunities for students to use the language effectively.
Lower primary students participated in a variety of language based activities and competitions that include Spelling Bee, Know Your Traditional Songs and creating comics using ToonDoo software. The upper primary pupils pitted their language prowess against each other on writing and reciting poetry besides being exposed to the Malay tradisional clothes, Wau and Wayang Kulit. At the end of the fortnight period, the pupils had an engaging and interactive learning period that further deepened their passion for learning their Mother Tongue language. Mdm Eireena Rahman Language Ambassadors
Last Saturday, 9th of July, we went to Woodlands Regional Library to attend an event organised by Majlis Bahasa Melayu Singapura which is an organization that advocates the use of Malay Language. We were nominated by our Malay teacher as our school "Duta Bahasa" or Language Ambassador in conjunction with the Bulan Bahasa or Malay Language Month. We were exposed to many aspects of the Malay Language and were given the responsibility to disseminate the information to the Malay Language students in TNPS. There were several interesting talks held on that day. We were very excited to meet Khairuddin Saharom and Zaza Majid who are two well-known Malay celebrities that shared their learning experiences as students and what they had done during their childhood times to excel not only in Malay but also in English. We were also introduced to a Malay learning online portal, www.mbms.sg that contained many interesting online lessons. In fact, non-Malay speakers can have access to this website to learn Malay Language. In addition, we received a certificate of participation and acknowledgement from Mr Hawazi Daipi who is the Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Minister of Education & Minister of Manpower. We would like to end with a quote from the talk we attended that day, "Wariskan Bahasa yang kita warisi kepada generasi yang seterusnya. Gunakan Bahasa Melayu di setiap ruang dan peluang." When translated, it means "Enable our future generations to inherit our language. Use Malay Language whenever opportunity arises." Sri Nur Athirah & Nur Shahirah (Class 6.7) Creative Syair (Malay Poetry) Workshop Cum Competition On Saturday, 9th of July 2011, Nurul Atiqa Bte Md Nasir, Aisha Bte Shamsudin, Hirza Haizal Bin Hamzah and Nur Syahirah Bte Mohd Yusof, took part in the Creative Syair Workshop Cum Competition organized by Geylang Serai Community Club. The event was held in conjunction with the Bulan Bahasa 2011(Malay Language Month). Pupils from several primary and secondary schools attended the workshop, as well as, the Creative Syair Writing Competition. Our pupil, Nurul Atiqa Bte Md.Nasir, came in 2nd out of about 40 pupils who took part in the Creative Syair Writing Competition.
Our pupils also took part in the Syair Reading Competition. With their melodious voices, Aisha Bte Shamsudin came in 8th, Nurul Atiqa Bte Md.Nasir came in 6th and Hirza Haizal Bin Hamzah came in 3rd in the Syair Reading Competition. Their efforts practising everyday after school have not been wasted. Congratulations to all of them for getting the top ten positions and thank you to their parents for giving their fullest support for their children to take part in the competition! Mdm Salinah Rahman Primary 1 Tambourine Lessons In Term 2, all the pupils from the 7 Primary One classes had tambourine dance lessons once a week. An instructor was assigned to each class to teach them the dance steps and the handling of tambourines. The whole programme took 8 lessons to equip them with the basic skills of tambourine dance. Each class had their own choice of song to practise to. The pupils were able to master the tempo and rhythm of the song chosen.
During the last week of the term, the pupils had the opportunity to showcase what they have learnt from the 8 lessons. Everyone was able to see the other classes’ dance moves. Each class put up fantastic dance moves. It was truly an eye-opener for everyone to witness how musically-inclined the Primary One pupils are. Great job, Primary One! Click here to view a video of a Tambourine Dance Performance! Miss Cheryl Lek Congratulations to TNPS Dikir Barat teams!
Pupils and teachers-in-charge of TNPS Dikir Barat teams sacrificed the first two weeks of the school holidays for the rigorous trainings to prepare themselves for the Si Cilik 11 Competition (an annual national level Dikir Barat Competition for primary schools). The competition was held at Yio Chu Kang CC on the 11th June 2011.
Under the guidance of our experienced and committed instructor of 4 years, Mr Firdaus Faisal, the pupils showed their ability to excel in their performances. The girls’ team clinched the GOLD award. Hanisah Hamizah’s melodious voice captured the judges’ hearts and she got for herself the Best Tok Juara Award (Lead Singer). Moriyanti managed to clinch the Best Tukang Karut Award (Supporting Lead Singer). The girls’ team also won the Piala Srikandi (Best Female Group Trophy). Besides that, the team also clinched the Best Lyrics Award (lyrics written by Mr Firdaus). The girls’ chorus singers were also nominated for the Best Awok-awok Award (chorus singers).
The boys’ team performed well too. The boys captured the audiences’ hearts with their cute and wonderful performance. They managed to grab the SILVER Award. The team was also nominated for the Best Lyrics Award. Good job, boys and girls! The teams shall continue to work harder for next year’s competition and put in their best to bring more glory to the school. Mdm Salinah Rahman Recess Recital (May 2011) 5 May 2011 was the day for Recess Recital. This was a special RR as it was the first-ever collaboration between the READ@Library English programme and the Music Department. After some weeks of practicing, the P5.1 boys were ready for their debut in Recess Recital/READcital! Mdm Rukiah gamely and expressively read the book “The Music Teacher from the Black Lagoon” while the P5.1 boys supplied a musical sound at the mention of various words, doing a fabulous job! To have this done well, a great amount of concentration and practices are needed, not to mention a remarkably accurate sense of rhythm.
Incidentally, “The Music Teacher from the Black Lagoon” is a popular book from the bestselling Black Lagoon series. The protagonist, Hubie, once again faces his comically horrific fears before his first day of music class. His fertile imagination runs wild as he conjures pictures of his new music teacher as a Viking who comes armed with a pitchfork, a laser baton. He even recalls a prison called Sing-Sing (located in the town of Ossining, New York along the banks of the Hudson River), and links this with music having a lot of bars too! At the end of this story, when Hubie faces the music, so to speak, he discovers that the music teacher is nothing like how he has imagined her to be. His fears are quelled! This is often true of us as well. When facing the unknown, the uncharted course, our imagination sometimes portrays the worst-case scenario when the actual situation is not half as bad! It was delightful to have Mrs Chua “Singin’ in the Rain” together with trainee teachers. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow quipped, “Into each life a little rain must fall”. When the rain comes, let the brolly shield us, as we look beyond the blues and be singing in the rain. What a glorious feeling!
It is always noteworthy when pupils volunteer to perform, like what the P5.6 pupils did! When the “showbiz bug” hit them, they did not resist that urge, did an amazing (and edited) rendition of “Just The Way You Are” for their well-deserved “five minutes of fame and fun”!
The last thing that gave all of us a deep sense of satisfaction is to hear a collective groan of disappointment when the pupils were told the next RR will take place in July! May marked the fifth and the last Recess Recital for Semester 1. We will re-charge and re-start the RR once again when July comes around! Yes, see you in July (most probably, on 20 July) for another exciting and exuberating RR! Thank you for your support for RR! We couldn’t have done this without you! Mrs Lydia Leong Tampines Central GRC Emergency Protection Day
On Saturday, 16 April, our International and Indian Dance groups performed during the Tampines Central GRC Emergency Protection Day at Poi Ching Primary School. Many residents were around visiting booths and learning on some emergency precaution measures. Our dancers were very excited and they performed their very best on stage. Miss Liew Yuan Ting Service to Education Award 2011
Every year, MOE gives recognition to members of the School Advisory Committee for their contributions to the school community. We are very proud that our SAC member, Mrs Rosalind Seow has been conferred the “Service to Education Award” for 2011. Mdm Rosalind Seow has been a member of Tampines North Primary School’s Advisory Committee for 8 years. As a member, she actively participates in school functions despite her busy schedule. For example, she even sacrificed her daughter’s birthday celebration last year to be with our staff at our annual dinner. She is an active supporter of our staff well being programmes. Her generous contributions to our staff dinner’s lucky draw prizes have added an extra glamour to our dinners, and extra fun to our staff. As an active member, she attends all the meetings and involves herself in approving the use of SAC funds to support our needy students. She has the welfare of our students at heart and contributes towards student development through her other key role as the Chairman of the Parents Support Group. The school staff and students are grateful to her contributions and dedication to the school. Miss Liew Yuan Ting Recess Recital (April 2011) The Recess Recital took place on 7 April with a bang! The venue was, as usual, the Music Room 1, and the electrifying buzz was evidently felt. Mdm Danker was the emcee. She first introduced us to John Wee (P3.7) who played for us on the piano “Prelude in C” by J. S. Bach. John owns two pianos at home – two precious treasures!
The performers did not let the cat out of the bag; even the organizers were kept in the dark! We did not know who would be performing and what they would be performing. In good time, everything was revealed! The newly-formed Boyz Band made its first – hopefully, not last – appearance. Under the “baton” of Mr Zahir, our amiable CCPE, Mr Hakim belted out a song by Coldplay, “Yellow”, which shot him to stardom and made him “Mr Popular” for that day. He was accompanied by Mr Zahir, Mr Subash and Mr Hisham, SH – PE/CCA. Mr Subash and Mr Hisham took turns to play the guitar and drums – their drumming and strumming left us happy and humming! Most of us do know of Mr Subash’s ability to play the guitar, but Mr Hisham’s musicality caused many jaws to drop!
As Mr Hakim left the “stage”, Mr Haziq moved forward to take his place (and while the multi-talented Mr Subash and Mr Hisham switched instruments). Mr Haziq charmed us with “Don’t Stop Believing”. We believe his message to all of us who attended was to remind us to believe in ourselves and our diverse talents! Next, Mr Zahir showed us a youtube video clip of his rendition of Lady Gaga’s “Telephone”. He made the clip himself, singing, and accompanying his song with various instruments found in the Music Room, like the bongo and boomwhackers. Being such a natural performer, he might be inundated by calls from agents soon! After their boisterous and bohemian performances, Mr Haziq has this to say: It was definitely a heart warming experience to see the smiles on our students’ and teachers’ faces to know that they enjoy the performance! For Mr Zahir, he said, “As a musician, I was definitely attracted to performing during the TNPS Recess Recital. The students and teachers were a great audience and that made me feel at ease. It was a fun and unforgettable experience and I would definitely come back for more!”
We would really want to thank Mr Zahir, Mr Hakim, Mr Haziq, Mr Subash and Mr Hisham very much for their most enthusiastic and rousing performances at all 3 recesses for the Recess Recital! I'm continuously amazed by the way music is portrayed and enjoyed through different people and by different instruments at every RR! I definitely look forward to more performances from all our pupils and teachers again, whether as the newfound Hodgepodge Boyz Band, soloists, another ad hoc Group Glee, or from homemade music videos! All the performers brought the house down that day! Forsooth, each one of them – including John Wee – performed with a style unique to themselves and sounded great! They took our breath away! They are truly an inspiration for innovation, which, incidentally, was the theme of the day! They brought their own brand of fun and creativity in music to our pupils and teachers! :) The next RR is on 5 May, Thursday! It will be RRR (triple R) that day! What does the third “R” refer to? You will find out when you attend! Do remember to turn up! 5511! (“;) Mrs Lydia Leong |
