Minister's Message on Youth for the Environment Day

On the bright and sunny Sunday morning of 24 Apr 2011, about 150 TNPS pupils, parents, teachers and our Vice Principals attended the soft launch of the $3-million Tampines Eco Green park by Ministers Mr Mah Bow Tan and Mr Masagos Zulkifli.
The friendly and knowledgeable park rangers became our tour guides and took us on an informative eco tour, hiking through the sprawling 36.5 hectar eco-park developed by National Parks Board (NParks). It is designed to resemble a savannah, with marshlands, secondary rainforests and freshwater ponds.
The green sanctuary is home to 70 species of birds such as the White-beliied Sea Eagle and Sunda Pygmy Woodpecker, 13 species of dragonflies, 12 species of butterflies and 32 species of spiders, including the first-time discovery here of the fast-moving Sphingius Vivax from the Family Corinnidae.

We trekked through the park on its 3.1km trail carpeted with Zoysia, a species of hardy creeping grass native to South East Asia. We soaked ourselves in the diverse sounds of birds and insects, as well as the tranquillity of the park. We came across the curious aquatic ‘Apple Snails’ that lay clusters of pink eggs near the edge of ponds, the brightly coloured caterpillars of the Pansy Butterflies that ‘invaded’ a shrub, the collared Kingfisher perched on the dead Acacia tree branch, and the majestic Brahminy Eagle circling above us as we visited the various interactive stations.
The eco-friendly features of the park also include benches and signages made from fallen tree trunks, birdwatching hides fashioned out of twigs and branches, and the eyebrow-raising first-ever flush-free eco toilet in public parks in Singapore. It converts human waste into compost using bacteria and wood shavings. In fact, many of us visited the eco-toilet and found it hard to believe that it was truly odourless!

When we crossed path with the Ministers and their convoy, our pupils and parents shook hands with them enthusiastically.
The tour ended at the shed near the main entrance to the park after more than an hour’s walk.
We gathered that residents in Tampines North are indeed very fortunate to have access to the unique and rare gem of what is left of the heavily developed Tampines Town. If you have not visited the park, plan a trip soon! Just remember, everyone plays a part in keeping our parks clean and green!

Congratulations! Our school has recycled 6,059kg of recyclable waste. Hence, our school is one of the 46 schools which have collected more than 5,000kg of recyclable waste. Our school will receive the maximum donation of $10,000 for our FAS fund. As it is a whole school approach, we would not have done it without your effort and commitment. Thank you!

CapitaLand launched the “Green for Hope” Project in conjunction with CapitaLand Hope Foundation as part of its “Building a Greener Future” Programme. This project is open to all primary schools in Singapore. From 1 July 2008 to 30 June 2009, for every kilogram of waste the school recycles, CapitaLand Hope Foundation will donate $2 to the school’s welfare fund.

P1-P5 pupils were scheduled to visit the NEA Enviro Buzz and Green Club booth during the Green Awareness week.
The first-ever Environment Exhibition on wheels aims to spread environmental messages to schools. The bus contains information on all aspects of the environment which encompasses clean environment, energy efficiency, resource conservation and sustainable development.

Our pupils had the honour in exhibiting their projects in the “Go Green 3 2009”. This event was jointly conducted by the North East CDC, National Environmental Agency and Senoko Corporation. The event consisted of a public display of items made from recycled and reused materials. More than 20 schools in the North East took part in the exhibition. Our pupils put up 2 booths at the atrium of White Sands Shopping Centre alongside with other schools.
Let’s give our pupils three cheers for a job well-done!
